A new video board will make a huuuuge difference if you're using Premiere on a MP tower. You want bang for buck out of it as you want money going towards the next box, not hitting this box with the paddles and keeping it alive.

You're looking at 2 years of life with the tower, 3 on the long end. You can easily swap out the GPUs for something like an NVidia 750Ti for around $150 or so, and you'll notice a big jump in performance (though you'll lose your boot screen, which includes Single User Mode and any other pre-OS X screens, which can be pretty spooky).Īt this point I wouldn't throw Quadro money at a MacPro tower. Those older cards don't support CUDA, and their OpenCL performance (if it'll even work) is downright abysmal. A lot of those suckers came with ancient Nvidia GPUs on the low end (like the 200 series) or now-depreciated ATI GPUs on the high end (like the 5770). Since you're in the Adobe world you may want to consider swapping the GPU while you're at it. You can always add more yourself very easily, though since it's all ECC server-grade RAM it can be a little pricey. Generally newer is better, as the individual cores may have been faster, even if the clock speed was slower. I don't really know the balance between older models with low clock speed/more cores or a recent model with less cores/higher clock speed and better hardware such as ram. We've got one in the office and it's really starting to chug. I've seen used Mac Pros go for less than 1000$ and I wanted to know where to draw the line. Looking for something more local?
